SUMMARY:Masterclass: Beyond the Basics: Real-World Sexuality and Consent Education for Years 5–10
DESCRIPTION:Our Masterclass series explores the latest health and physical education research. We offer 8 Masterclasses each year. \nMasterclass #8  2025: \nMandatory consent education in Australian schools has opened the door for a deeper look at how we teach Sexuality and Sexual Health across Stages 3\, 4\, and 5 of the PDHPE syllabus. As students move into adolescence\, the topic of consent becomes increasingly important. Evidence from international studies shows that when young people receive comprehensive sexuality education\, it leads to better health outcomes—such as increased use of safe sex practices and a reduction in experiences of sexual violence. \nThis Masterclass will support PDHPE teachers to: \n\nUnderstand adolescent development\, including how puberty affects students physically\, socially\, emotionally\, and cognitively—and what this means for how they learn about relationships and consent.\nReflect on your own teaching approach and experiences delivering age-appropriate sexuality and sexual health education in the classroom.\nBuild confidence in teaching sensitive content—including sexuality\, sexual health and consent—in ways that are safe\, inclusive and aligned with the PDHPE syllabus.\n\nPRESENTER\n \nProfessor Melissa Kang\, Sydney University\nMelissa Kang is Professor of Adolescent Health at the University of Sydney. She is a medical doctor with 30 years’ experience working clinically with adolescents ad young adults. Her research has focused on building health system literacy among young people\, improving access to health care and understanding adolescent sexuality and sexual health. She recently led a NSW Health funded study on mapping Sexuality and Sexual Health pre-service teacher training across NSW. She was the medical consultant and writer behind the ‘Dolly Doctor’ column in Dolly magazine\, from 1993 to 2016 when the magazine closed. \nDETAILS\nDate: Thursday\, December 11 2025\nTime: 3.45-5.15pm – 60min presentation & 30min Q&A\nFormat: Live online video conference\nCost:\nFree for ACHPER NSW/ACT members (login to receive the discount)\n– $30 non-members. You can join ACHPER NSW. Teacher Membership is only $140 p.a which includes 8 free masterclasses each year. \nACCREDITATION\nAttending an ACHPER NSW Masterclass will contribute 1.5 hours of NESA elective PD in the priority area of delivery and assessment of NSW curriculum – addressing standard descriptor 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW

SUMMARY:Masterclass: Is there education in Physical Education?
DESCRIPTION:Our Masterclass series explores the latest health and physical education research. We offer 8 Masterclasses each year. \nMasterclass #5  2025: \nWithin an Australian context there is a paucity of evidence to demonstrate that learning occurs in PE. More specifically\, there is a lack of evidence to demonstrate that authentic learning occurs in PE\, highlighting the need for PE researchers\, practitioners\, and teachers to design and lead empirical and robust research on learning in PE. What learning occurs in your PE classes and lessons? What methods and processes do you incorporate in your PE curriculum to demonstrate that student learning does occur? We share our research findings and present these as an opportunity to stimulate discussion amongst HPE and generalist teachers to advance the role of research in teaching practice. \nPRESENTER\n \nDr Casey Mainsbridge\, University of New England\nCasey Mainsbridge is a Senior Lecturer at the University of New England. His areas of research interest focus upon health\, health habits\, behaviour change\, physical activity\, sedentary behaviour\, fitness\, pedagogical practice\, student engagement\, and wellbeing in multiple contexts. He has over twenty-fours years’ experience as a health and fitness professional\, with much of his work connected with health\, wellbeing\, individual and group motivation\, and quality of life at a population level. Casey is passionate about the importance of both teacher and student wellbeing for educational sustainability and future prosperity. \nDETAILS\nDate: September 11 2025\nTime: 3.45-5.15pm – 60min presentation & 30min Q&A\nFormat: Live online video conference\nCost:\nFree for ACHPER NSW/ACT members (login to receive the discount)\n– $30 non-members. You can join ACHPER NSW. SUMMARY:Masterclass: Impactful teaching about digital technologies and social media in PDHPE
DESCRIPTION:Our Masterclass series explores the latest health and physical education research. We offer 8 Masterclasses each year. \nMasterclass #3  2025: \nThe recent updates to the PDHPE curriculum have introduced several key changes\, particularly in the areas of digital technologies and social media. The Masterclass will provide an overview of these key changes in light of the most research in these areas and aligned with teaching resources. 1. Integration of Digital Literacy: The curriculum places increased emphasis the importance of digital literacy\, teaching students how to navigate and critically evaluate information found online. This includes understanding the impact of digital footprints and responsible\, sage and ethical use of technology. 2. Focus on Social Media: The increased focus on social media on health and well-being is timely and needed in light of government efforts to ban young peoples’ access to social media. It is even more important to equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly\, promoting overall well-being in an increasingly connected society.  \nPRESENTER\n \nKarley Beckman\, Senior Lecturer\, University of Wollongong  \nKarley Beckman is a Senior lecturer in Digital Technologies for Learning in the School of Education at the University of Wollongong. Karley’s research explores children\, young people and adult learners’ technology practice.
